Happy Halloween everybody! Funny thing, though - you know how they say that the Christmas season seems to come earlier every year (well, at least in stores and such!)? It's true! I just got an email about Kristin Chenoweth's new Christmas album, charmingly titled A Lovely Way To Spend Christmas. I have to admit I didn't have high hopes about listening to it - though I love Kristin on Pushing Daisies (which better not get canceled!!), I know that she's been in a lot of theater productions and I (foolishly) feared that A Lovely Way To Spend Christmas would be an over-the-top Broadway thing.I was wrong! Of course the album's a little over-the-top - it just wouldn't be a Christmas album if it weren't! :) Kristin's voice is so pretty and, especially on the slower tracks (like the lounge-y, warm and cozy 'I'll Be Home For Christmas'), conveys the emotions of the lyrics beautifully. Songs like 'Christmas Island' (a kicky tune!), 'Sleigh Ride/Marshmallow World' (a sweet duet with John Pizzarelli), and 'Come On Ring Those Bells' (a seasonal hoe-down!) evoke the fun and excitement of the Christmas season, and Kristin's take on old Christmas favorites, like the orchestral 'Do You Hear What I Hear?', country-fied 'Silver Bells,' and magically haunting 'What Child Is This?', will be sure to bring back memories of Christmases past.
The album's original tracks, 'Home On Christmas Day' (my favorite of the two) and 'Born On Christmas Day,' have a wonderful Christmas feeling - and may just end up being new Christmas classics! Also be sure to listen out for the dreamy 'The Christmas Waltz,' 'Sing' (a tune originally written for Big Bird!), and the gorgeous album closer 'Sleep Well Little Children/What A Wonderful World.'
