I've really been enjoying Martha Wainwright's new album, I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too. I'd never heard of her much before now (all I knew was that she was part of the very musical family that includes Rufus Wainwright) but I'm glad I decided to take a listen to her samples on 7Digital!
I suppose the album would be classified as 'singer-songwriter' or 'indie' but sometimes those labels can indicate that the music is maddeningly dense and, well, bland. That is most certainly not the case with I Know You're Married. The bright and breezy opening track 'Bleeding All Over You' has an almost Latin vibe in the chorus - not quite, but almost. A strong opener and it sets the tone for the rest of the album: just plain excellent tunes. 'You Cheated Me' has great guitars and is probably the catchiest song off the album - it would do well on the radio, being at once accessible and something special.
My favorite track on the album is 'Jesus And Mary Chain.' It starts off with an almost electro beat but leads into a wonderfully heavy, dark folksy/bluesy sound. A real treat and the closing - 'don't bring me down' - is haunting. 'Comin' Tonight' is much more upbeat and is sort of 'You Cheated Me' Part 2 but a great song in its own right. I think my second favorite song on the album is the otherworldly 'Tower Song,' with its fairytale-like lyrics and epic, haunting strings.
'Hearts Club Band' brings us back to reality with its bluesy shuffle and aching chorus. Things get a bit depressing with 'So Many Friends,' a song about those loved and lost, but it's beautiful so it all works out in the end. A really lovely tune. 'In The Middle Of The Night' is another great dark tune with fab bass and guitar work, and vocals that build in intensity as the song plays on. 'The George Song' has a fun, upbeat sound and is a nice burst of light after the darkness of the last few tracks.
'The Niger River' is up next and is a pretty, atmospheric tune with instrumentation and vocals that flow along like a... well, like a river. :) 'Jimi' at first seemed too long at over 5 minutes, but after I listened a few times I changed my mind - there are a lot of little nuances to pick up on in this song and it wouldn't have worked if it were shorter. Speaking of short songs, 'See Emily Play' is pretty darn short at 2:18 and that's a shame because it's such a pretty little song! I would have liked to hear this one go on for a little longer.
The album closes with the subdued 'I Wish I Were.' It doesn't quite reach the heights of the other songs on the album, but they set the bar pretty high so it's all good. It's a nice, low-key ending and it leaves you wanting to listen to the album all over again - and that's what a good closing number should do.
So give the album a listen and see if you like it too! :)
